Deaf actress in program “the Voyage of the Mimi?”?

I remember watching a TV program/ mini-series in elementary school called “The Voyage of the Mimi.” I think it was a whale-watching boat or some kind of biological research vessel. There was a deaf character on the show (I think her name was Sally or Ruth) and I wondered if she was deaf in real life? I hadn’t seen a deaf character who was portrayed as capable and important since then until the lawyer on “My Name is Earl.” I would appreciate any info on this person! Thanks!
